Guitarist Zakk Jones Provides Some Great Tips On Using Drop 3 Voicings
Переглядів 537Місяць тому
Drop 3 voicings are the meat and potatoes part of your jazz guitar journey. These are likely chords that you have seen and played before, but maybe never knew that they were part of a distinct group that can be categorized. Remember, drop voicings exist because playing the inversions of a closed position 7th chord is, in most cases, impossible or at least not viable in most scenarios. The drop ...

I knew Charlie Chiarenza when he ran Alfonse’s in Toluca Lake. That was a restaurant with jazz in the very tight bar area. Charlie was a great host and seemed to know everybody. He booked himself on guitar a few times, but the jazz was always great. Lou Levy was a regular on piano and sometimes Ross Tompkins after taping the Carson Show. They even jammed big bands into the narrow space on occasion - Frank Sinatra Jr, Bill Berry. More often, very tasteful trios and quartets. It was a terrific hangout - Jazz and cocktails.

That is beautiful! I saw this guitar on display at the Smithsonian and had just met Bill at the racetrack. Later in ‘98 I toured his facility and bought one of his flat top guitars. Later I toured his then new facility and bought another. So sad we lost him in 2017.

I saw this band at the Blossom Jazz Festival in Ohio around 83 or 84, both Scofield and Stern were in the band, it was fantastic, at one point I see a figure standing at the edge of the stage, in a suit, holding a trumpet, it turned out to be Winton Marsalis but Miles ignored him!

I love hearing these great old stories about Miles Davis. Like the one about how he enjoyed speaking to fans after the shows and how he'd stay for hours signing autographs and telling dirty jokes. Miles was always willing to offer advice and compliments. There was that one time where he told a crowd of 50-thoudsand people to go shove it up their asses. That Miles, what a character.

This interviewer is a jackass. His phone is ringing, he’s completely unfamiliar with the content and has done no prep, he has no idea how to say the interviewee’s name, he picks up his own guitar and starts playing over Neff’s discussion, and to be honest I think he’s totally out of his depth. It was super telling that he had to ask if the son clave was describing 5/4 time.

I recall and replay instrumental pieces developed on riffs which support a study in style and develop them as if they would support a singer. Later (usually much) I may be recalling a piece (in my head) and lyrics sometimes bust in and I jump up to write some down. At that point I become a lyricist. The words are not allowed to alter the arrangement and while I may be able to sing the words, I'm still the instrumentalist. So, the lyrics are kept in wait for the right singer (which I don't look for). So while I consider myself a songwriter I'm not a singer/songwriter - nor recording artist.
